Happy Birthday Google

Google Birthday - Used without PermissionGoogle is 9 years old today and they are celebrating. It’s really astonishing that it’s been that long and that short a time that it’s been around.

Here are some other things that happened in 1998, according to Wikipedia.

  1. Smoking was banned in California restaurants
  2. Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski is sentenced to life in prison
  3. Paula Jones accuses U.S. President Bill Clinton of sexual harassment
  4. Lewinsky scandal: On American television, President Bill Clinton denies he had “sexual relations” with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
  5. Hustler publisher Larry Flynt is acquitted on charges of defaming Jerry Falwell.
  6. Titanic wins 11 Oscars
  7. The Food and Drug Administration approves Viagra for use as a treatment for male impotence, the first pill to be approved for this condition in the United States.
  8. Belfast Agreement is signed between the Irish and British governments
  9. Apple Computer unveils the iMac
  10. Eric Robert Rudolph is charged with 6 bombings (including the 1996 Olympic bombing) in Atlanta, Georgia.
  11. In South Africa, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission presents its report, which condemns both sides for committing atrocities.
  12. Iraq disarmament crisis begins: Iraq announces it will no longer cooperate with United Nations weapons inspectors.
  13. John Glenn returns to space on the shuttle Discovery
  14. President Bill Clinton is impeached by the United States House of Representatives.
  15. It was a lot harder to pick out events from that list than I thought it would be! What a busy year!

Everything is Connected

Everything is connected if you can see what's not being said, what's missing, and read between the lines. Understanding those connections not only makes us people, but better marketers. In the end, it's all about understanding how what you are doing is relevant to someone else.

My job is to understand those connections and be able to help you to not only be able to see them, but also use tthose connections to improve the world around you. Sometimes it's just why someone would care about your product. Sometimes its understanding how services like Twitter are help return a lost sense of community.

Either way, it's about making connections.
